Public Participation in Urban Development

Katrin Hofer's research focuses on public participation in urban development. Building on a conceptual approach to participation, her empirical research engages with a neighbourhood in Johannesburg, South Africa, focusing on the perspective of the residents. With her research she wants to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of participation, by inviting people into the dialogue and asking them about their preferences and expectations regarding their involvement in urban development. She follows a sequential multi-method approach, combining a survey experiment and semi-structured group interviews.

Her research interests include: Urban Development, Participatory Planning, Southern Urban Theory, Housing, Urban Inequalities, Feminist Planning

Katrin Hofer is a PhD Candidate at the Spatial Development and Urban Policy Research group, ETH Zürich. Supervised by Prof. Dr. David Kaufmann, her PhD-project examines public participation in urban development in South Africa. Katrin holds an MSc in Urban Development Planning from the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London, and a BA in Social Work and Social Policy from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Before joining ETH Zürich, she was engaged in applied research and development projects in Europe, Africa and Asia. In her Master’s thesis, Katrin explored the relationship between housing and citizenship in post-apartheid South Africa.
